What Is BIMI? Making Your Brand Visible

Email inboxes get crowded. Between newsletters, promotions, and transactional messages, most emails look nearly identical at a glance. That lack of visual identity makes it harder for legitimate brands to stand out and easier for phishing and impersonation attempts to blend in.

That’s where BIMI comes in.

BIMI (Brand Indicators for Message Identification) allows verified brands to display their official logo directly in supported inboxes. When it’s set up correctly, BIMI turns every email you send into a visible brand moment and signals to recipients that the email is trustworthy.

What Is BIMI?

BIMI allows organizations to display their brand logo next to authenticated emails in inboxes that support BIMI, such as Gmail, Yahoo, and Apple Mail.

Instead of a generic initial or colored circle, recipients see your actual logo before they even open the message, so they can quickly recognize that the email is genuinely from your brand.

BIMI does not replace email security standards. Instead, it builds on top of existing authentication protocols, rewarding a properly authenticated email with greater visibility and credibility.

How BIMI Works (At a High Level)

BIMI relies on a simple but strict chain of trust:

  1. Your email has been sent
  2. The receiving inbox provider authenticates it using SPF, DKIM, and DMARC
  3. The provider checks for a BIMI record in your domain’s DNS
  4. Your logo is retrieved and validated
  5. The logo appears in the inbox if all requirements are met

If any step fails, the email may still be delivered, but the logo will not display. BIMI never bypasses authentication or spam filtering.

What You Need to Use BIMI

BIMI has clear prerequisites. If you skip even one, your logo will not appear.

1. Enforced DMARC Authentication

Your domain must have:

  • SPF and DKIM are correctly configured
  • DMARC set to an enforcement policy (p=quarantine or p=reject)

A monitoring‑only DMARC policy (p=none) is not sufficient for BIMI. Inbox providers need proof that you actively protect your domain from spoofing and impersonation.

2. A BIMI‑Compliant Logo

Your logo must meet strict technical requirements:

  • SVG Tiny PS format
  • Square dimensions
  • No scripts, animations, or embedded fonts
  • Publicly accessible over HTTPS

Most existing brand assets need to be adapted to meet these specifications.

3. A BIMI DNS Record

You publish a BIMI TXT record at:

default._bimi.yourdomain.com

This record tells the inbox provider where to find your logo and, if applicable, your certificate. Without this DNS record, BIMI cannot function.

4. A Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) or Common Mark Certificate (CMC)

Many major providers—especially Gmail—require a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC) or Common Mark Certificate (CMC) to display your logo.

  • VMCs verify that your logo is trademarked and that you are legally authorized to use it
  • CMCs are an alternative for brands without traditional trademark registrations

If you have a certificate, some inboxes also display a verified checkmark next to your logo, further reinforcing trust.

Which Email Providers Support BIMI?

BIMI support varies by provider, but more and more are adopting it. Today, several major inboxes support BIMI, including Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and Apple Mail.

Inbox providers are ultimately the ones who decide whether and when a logo is displayed based on authentication results and sender reputation.

Why BIMI Matters for Your Brand

BIMI is more than a visual upgrade. It’s a strategic credibility tool.

Instant Brand Recognition

Your logo is visible before the email is even opened, reinforcing familiarity.

Stronger Trust Signals

BIMI is a visual confirmation that your email passed rigorous authentication checks

Differentiation in Crowded Inboxes

When multiple emails compete for attention, a recognizable logo helps your brand stand out naturally without having to rely on subject‑line tricks.

Reinforcement of Email Security Investments

If you’ve already invested in SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, BIMI is the visible payoff that turns backend security into front‑end brand value.

BIMI Is a Reward, Not a Shortcut

BIMI does not fix poor deliverability on its own. It does not override spam filtering, reputation issues, or authentication failures. Instead, it rewards brands that already follow best email practices with increased visibility and trust.

When implemented correctly, BIMI becomes part of a larger email reputation strategy that blends security, branding, and user confidence into a single inbox experience.

BIMI represents a shift in email from invisible authentication to visible trust.

BIMI helps recipients instantly recognize legitimate messages while giving brands a powerful new way to stand out. For organizations serious about email security, brand credibility, and long‑term engagement, BIMI isn’t just a nice‑to‑have. It’s a natural next step.
